Call to ease crisis at Chengara

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Human rights activists have called upon the government and leaders of political parties to take steps to resolve the snowballing crisis at Chengara at the earliest.

Addressing a news conference here on Wednesday, K. Ajitha, B. R. P. Bhaskar and C. S. Chandrika described the situation consequent upon the blockade in the name of trade unions explosive and quite disconcerting and warned that things could go out of control at any moment.

No action had been taken so far against those who had attacked the rally to mark the first anniversary of the Chengara stir.

The administration was also observing passive silence in the face of violence unleashed by a band of hirelings in the name of the workers and one could not help suspecting the support of those in power for their actions, they said.

The blockade, they pointed out, was preventing the agitators at Chengara to even get food and medicines.

The leadership of the CPI(M) and the CPI had the responsibility to dissuade those who were engaged in blocking the movement of food and medicines to the poor people agitating for land at Chengara.

They called upon the Kerala State Women’s Commission to visit the agitators and look into allegations that three women had been molested by those blockading the agitators.
