CHANGANASSERY: Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy on Wednesday alleged that the State government was engaged in a covert attempt to scuttle the Rs.1,840-crore agriculture revival package sanctioned by the Central government. Flagging off the Kuttanad Karshaka Raksha Jatha taken out by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) here, Mr. Chandy said the revival package was a gift from the Centre to the lakhs of farmers in Kuttanad who were reeling under one of the worst crises in recent years, perpetrated by the mismanagement and politicisation of issues by the State government. If implemented properly, the revival package would have found a lasting solution to the continuing crisis in the paddy sector and would have liberated lakhs of paddy farmers from debt trap, Mr. Chandy said. ‘Backtracked’The State government, which had earlier said that it was ready to bear 25 per cent of the expenses of the scheme, has gone back on its words, Mr Chandy said. Out of the total outlay of Rs.1,840 crore, the Central government share is Rs.1836.10 crore. The State has to contribute only Rs.4.65 crore. However, the State government has expressed its unwillingness to share even this paltry sum, Mr Chandy said. The Opposition Leader said that the UDF would intensify agitation if the State government continued with its “anti-people and anti-farmer policies.” Mr. Chandy inaugurated the march by handing over the flag to the jatha captain, Lal Varghese Kalpakavadi. Kottayam DCC president K.C. Joseph presided over the function. Alappuzha DCC(I) president A.A. Shukkur, KPCC(I) secretary Joseph Vazhackan, Anto Antony, Lathika Subhash, Josey Sebastian and others spoke. After overnight stay at Ramankari in Alappuzha district on Wednesday, the march will proceed to Alappuzha town via Mankombu. The valedictory function will be inaugurated by KPCC(I) president Ramesh Chennithala on Thursday evening.
