UDF convener P.P. Thankachan Thiruvananthapuram: United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan on Wednesday alleged that officials in the Education Department and some ruling front politicians were deliberately creating uncertainty in the admissions to self-financing professional colleges to help the ‘Karnataka-Tamil Nadu education lobby.’ Addressing a press meet here, Mr. Thankachan said that the UDF had information that these officials and politicians had stayed in Chennai and Bangalore to hold discussions with representatives of the education lobby. “We will disclose the names at the appropriate time, when we get details and evidence,” he said. Mr. Thankachan termed the single-window system in Plus One admissions a big flop, with eligible students failing to get admissions. He urged the government to review the system. Secretariat blockadeHe said that the UDF would stage a Secretariat blockade on August 16, focusing on the government’s failure in the education sector, price rise, and hike in power and bus charges. ‘No expansion plans’In reply to questions, Mr. Thankachan said that the UDF did not have plans to expand and he was not aware whether the Congress high command had received any application to admit anyone to the coalition. Asked about the 2006 ties with the then DIC (K), he said that it was a mere electoral understanding and the decision had been taken collectively by the UDF. Mr. Thankachan said that he had received a request from Kerala Congress (Secular) leader P.C. George to be admitted to the UDF.
