KANNUR: The Students Federation of India (SFI) will observe country-wide education bandh on August 20 to protest against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s ‘failure’ to fulfil its promises for the education sector. SFI general secretary K.K. Ragesh said at a press meet here on Wednesday that the UPA government was yet to fulfil its promise for the education sector as enunciated in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP). As per the CMP outlay for education would be raised to six per cent of gross domestic product. This could be achieved only if allocation for education was increased to 10 per cent of the budget, he said adding that the Central budget set aside only 4.56 per cent of the total budget outlay.
