BHUBANESWAR: In view of the spurt in naxalite activities in Orissa, security agencies are on their toes to make the Independence Day celebration incident-free. For the State-level function, city police have chalked out a three-tier security strategy to ward off any untoward incident.

Speaking to mediapersons on security preparation for the D-Day here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Himanshu Lal said 26 platoons of police personnel would be deployed at various places.

At the ground level, the security arrangement would be supervised by three senior police officials of the rank of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police while eight Assistant Commissioners of Police will be available.

Twenty-one inspectors had been mobilised from different police stations and they would be assisted by 126 sub- inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors, Mr. Lal said.

Besides, several police officials would be deployed in civil dress to keep an eye on the crowd.

“We are making our moves based on the intelligence inputs. We are taking all the precautions to ensure that the celebration passes without violence,” the DCP said, adding that dogs and bombs squad had been kept ready to meet challenges in case of emergency.

He said police had already started frisking people at exit points of the city.

Police were taking extra safeguards since two dreaded naxalite leaders were arrested from Jagatsinghpur by the district police recently. It was suspected that their local recruits could attempt some sabotage attempt.

Meanwhile, the city police were also trying to detect some seven persons who had threatened to immolate themselves on Independence Day. They had been identified as Bipin Behari Malick, Bhushan Pati, Jayanti Sethi, Khirod Kumar Sahoo, Rebati Kant, Narayan Bag and Somnath Sahu.

A couple of years ago, a person had set himself ablaze on the parade ground causing embarrassment for police.
