BERHAMPUR: Women are the worst sufferers in any displacement caused by industrialization, opined speakers at a workshop organized on the Berhampur University campus on Wednesday. This workshop on the topic ‘Development induced displacement in Orissa and Women’s rights’ was organized by the Women’s Studies Research Centre of the Berhampur University. State Cabinet Ministers Manmohan Samal and Samir Dey as well as in-charge Vice-Chancellor of the university K. S. Padhi attended the workshop. Mr Samal described the problems of women in families facing displacement as a global phenomenon. According to Mr Dey around 25 lakh women were on the verge of displacement for different reasons in Orissa. According to him, tribal women were the worst sufferers of the problems caused due to cultural shock faced by them while searching for alternative livelihood in areas away from their traditional homeland. He said education was the greatest weapon to protect these women from the vagaries of displacement. Mr Padhi felt the Orissa Government should press industrial houses to come up with labour-intensive projects to provide employment scope to displaced families. He cited the example of women from families displaced by the shelved project of Tata Steel near Gopalpur port. These women used to earn from kewra flower plucking but they lost this livelihood when displaced from their homeland.
