Group clash on Ravenshaw University campus leaves 30 students injured

CUTTACK: For more than two hours on Wednesday evening, the Ravenshaw University campus and the nearby College Square turned into a battlefield with two groups of students engaged in a pitched battle. It was a virtual free for all between 5 pm and 7 pm leaving at least 30 students injured, a few of them seriously.

Till reports came in, the entire campus and the nearby marketplace was reeling under tension and the entire area was covered with heavy deployment of police. Unconfirmed sources said a student leader was kept under captivity by the rival groups in one of the hostels while Registrar Satyakam Mishra was locked in his official chamber.

Despite the presence of top-ranked police officials of the city and senior cops from the police headquarters present at the spot, the situation has not improved with sporadic violence being reported time and again.

Sources pointed out that the skirmish began around 4.45 pm when a student leader accosted a few hostel students over passing of a lewd comment to a girl student. The matter was brought to the notice of the Registrar who tried his best to pacify the students. But by that time some local students had already gathered outside the campus which flared the situation and soon the fracas gave way to the group clash.
