NEW DELHI: The operational activities of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology were formally launched with the release of the admission brochure for 2008-09 by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Delhi Secretariat on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit said the setting up of IIIT in Delhi would give a boost to information technology in the Capital.

Stating that the institute would soon gain international status, she said it would attract faculty and students from across the world.

She said IIIT would begin functioning this academic year onwards and would use the facilities of Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology at Dwarka initially.

Noting that its permanent campus was coming up at Okhla, Ms. Dikshit said the unique aspect of IIIT, Delhi, would be its focus on specific domain areas and on software products. Leveraging fully its location advantage, it would also look at information technology expansion in areas of e-governance, defence applications, life sciences, technology-led education, finance, automobile engineering and mobile computing. A research-led institute, IIIT will offer B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D programmes.

Stating that over the years, the technical education system has grown rapidly, but quality and employability of most of the graduates has, of late, become an issue, Ms. Dikshit said these inadequacies lead thousands of people to pursue expensive education abroad. It was to fill this gap that the government took the decision to set up IIIT.

Ms. Dikshit said through an Act, the government had created an institution that can function with full autonomy. Accordingly, it has created an independent, empowered Board, chaired by well known IT personality Kiran Karnik, to guide and oversee the setting up and functioning of IIIT.
