‘Kamban Vizha’ revisits the epic

Staff Reporter

The festival hails the literary acumen and the visionary capabilities of Kamban

Memoir: V. Balasubramanian, Senior Manager, State Bank of India releasing the souvenir. S.V.S.V. Jayakumar receives it in Pudukottai.

PUDUKOTTAI: Lectures on ‘Kamba Raamayanam’; patti mandram on an interesting fiction; a comparative literary symposium on Kamban and Bharathidasan constituted the 33-rd ‘Kamban Vizha’ organised under the auspices of the Kamban Kazhagam here, recently.

Revisiting the epic

The festival provided the platform to discuss in detail the various literary facets of the Kamba Raamayanam for two days.

It was the meticulous selection of topics for the symposium and lectures that interested the audience. For instance, ‘Kalathai vendra Kamban’ threw light upon both the literary acumen and the visionary capabilities of Kamban.

‘Ivargal Indru vandhal’

More interesting was a ‘Kaviarangam’ with a hypothetical topic ‘Ivargal Indru vandhal.’

Led by Kavithai Pithan, a group of seven poets presented a thought-provoking lecture. Each of them vividly imagined the circumstances, if the Ravanan, Sri Rama, Mandodari and others of the Kamba Raamayanam came alive today.

Gift to literature

The secretary of the Kamban Kazhagam, R. Sampath Kumar said that although scores of eminent scholars and poets had authored Raamayanam, most of their works were devotion-centred. It was the Kamba Raamayanam which was a literary treasureand a gift to the literature of the classical language.

Poet Nanjil Sampath compared the impact of the Kamba Raamayanam on poems sung by Bharathidasan.

Noted scholars including T. Ramalingam from Chennai, Parveen Sultana, Prema Kumar and Rajaram participated in the sessions.

The Senior Manager of State Bank V. Balasubramanian released a souvenir brought out on the occasion and the first copy was received by S. V. S. V. Jayakumar.
