Exhibition, auction of rare coins tomorrow

Staff Reporter

COLLECTOR’S DELIGHT: Mumbai-based Todywalla’s Auctions announced on Wednesday that some of these rare coins will be auctioned in Bangalore.

BANGALORE: Over 320 gold coins, including rare ones over two millennia old, and Indian bank notes will be held on August 15 and 16 coinciding with Nanyadarshini 2008, the exhibition by Karnataka Numismatic Society, Bangalore.

The exhibition will be held from August 15 to 17 at Shikshakara Bhavan on K.G. Road.

Farok S. Todywalla of Art and Antique Décor, a Mumbai-based concern, told presspersons here on Wednesday that some coins up for auction date back to 200 B.C.E., hand-struck in silver, in circulation during the lifetime of the Buddha, known as the punch-marked coins of Gandhara.

In addition to this, there are gold coins of the Mauryan Empire, gold, silver and copper coins of Tipu Sultan and Mughal emperors Akbar Jahangir and Shah Jahan and so on.

Coins of various native principalities, including Bhopal, Hyderabad, Indore and Tripura would be auctioned, he said.

The Re. 1 pattern coin of 1960, which looked like an ordinary rupee but was a design and date never issued for circulation, was estimated to sell at Rs. 2 lakh, he said.

The auction would include 100-year-old Rs. 10 banknote, and a few Rs. 1,000 Republic of India notes demonetised during 1970s. Over 500 coins and banknotes would be auctioned in the two-day auction, he said.
