Interesting exhibits: G.V. Selvam, pro-Chancellor, VIT University, at the expo in Vellore on Thursday. VELLORE: Pro-Chancellor of VIT University G.V. Selvam has called upon contractors engaged in constructing commercial complexes to provide ample space for parking vehicles in view of the expected increase in the number of persons owning cars in the future. Inaugurating Build Expo ’08, an exhibition of building materials organised by the Builders’ Association of India (BAI), Vellore Centre, at the Khanna Mahal here on Thursday, Mr. Selvam said the rules governing commercial or residential buildings in Chennai stipulated the use of only 30 per cent of the available space for the construction of buildings, leaving the remaining vacant. With increasing construction activities in and around Vellore in recent times, and with the upgrading of Vellore into a Corporation, the provision of parking space in buildings was absolutely essential, he said. He called upon the BAI to provide workmanship training to masons to create a new breed of professional masons, in tune with the changing needs and modern trend in construction technology. The contractors should adopt environment-friendly practices such as planting a tree on each of the sites where they work. He urged the government to enhance the schedule of rates for construction of government buildings, or supply steel to the contractors at reasonable rates in the context of the spiralling prices of steel and cement, which prevented contractors from taking up government contracts. Mr. Selvam congratulated the BAI for having organised the exhibition, which would enable the builders and the consumers to know the latest products and building techniques. K. Venkatesan, Chairman, BAI, Vellore Centre, said this is the third exhibition being conducted by BAI, Vellore Centre. The VIT University has agreed to join hands with the BAI in conducting workmanship training programmes for masons and school dropouts, he said. S. Rajagopal, general council member, BAI, Vellore Centre, presided. G. Ramganesh, secretary of the centre, proposed a vote of thanks.
