Bidari’s removal sought

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The jury paid special attention to the atrocities perpetrated by the Joint Special Task Force set up to capture forest brigand Veerappan and sought the dismissal of the Commissioner of Police of Bangalore, Shankar Bidari, who was then the JSTF chief.

The jury said that there was “overwhelming evidence of state-sanctioned torture” in JSTF cases and many of the victims, some of whom gave testimonials, had mentioned Mr. Bidari as a direct perpetrator. The jury demanded an inquiry against him and his dismissal from the post of Commissioner.

Mr. Kumar said that it was a “mockery of human rights” to reward a police officer in charge of JSTF while the NHRC had given compensation to victims of JSTF atrocities.
