Coimbatore, Chennai in final

Coimbatore: Host Coimbatore outplayed Madurai 2-0 to enter the girls’ team final in the Yonex Tamil Nadu junior inter-district and State badminton championship, sponsored by Anamalais Toyota and Reliance, at the Jenney’s Courts, here on Thursday.

In the clash for the title, the host will take on Chennai, which notched up a 2-1 win over Vellore.

In the boys’ section, Chennai thrashed Erode 2-0 for a place in the last four.

The results: Team event: Boys: Quarterfinal: Chennai bt Erode 2-0 (M.R. Manikandan bt Mathew Vincent 21-11, 21-6; Sathya Narayana & M.R. Manikandan bt Mathew & Ravi Kumar 21-4, 21-6; Madurai bt Cuddalore 2-0 (S. Karthick bt C. Vignesh Kanna 21-13, 21-13; S. Karthick & C.R. Manikandan bt C. Vignesh Kanna & K. Suneri lost to Amreen Mubarak 21-13, 17-21, 21-12, Kanti & Suneri bt Amreen & Archana Devi 21-16, 21-18, Kanti bt Archana Devi 21-17, 21-10).

Easy for Vijaya Bank

Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) began its campaign on a splendid note with a 93-58 win over CRPF (Chandigarh) in the 44th all-India basketball tournament for men for the PSG Trophy at the PSG Tech courts on late on Wednesday.

The results: League: Western Rly. 57 (Ethiraj 14, Jasjot Singh 14) bt Customs & Central Excise (Kochi) 54 (Manoj 11, Vivek 11); Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) 93 (Deva Kumar 17, Srinivasa Gowda 16) bt CRPF (Chandigarh) 58 (Balraj Singh 12).

Varman wins

At Rajapalayam, Vasantha Ruba Varman of Chennai and J. Vaishanavi of Tiruchy won the Dolphin Trophies for boys and girls respectively in the Sree Jayajothi Cements 21st TN State under-13 chess championship organised by the VDCA on Wednesday.

Varman and G. Akash of Chennai tied for the honours with nine points each in 11 rounds but Varman emerged champion on better progressive score. Vaishnavi collected 10 points.

Final placings: Boys: 1-2: Vasantha Ruba Varman, G. Akash 9 pts; 3-4: Tejas Ravichandran, D.S. Shashaank 8.5.

Girls: 1: J. Vaishnavi 10pts; 2: J. Saranya 9.5; 3: Srija Seshadri 8.

RSK HSS triumphs

RSK Higher Secondary School defeated St. Joseph’s College Higher Secondary School 2-0 to win the title at the Soccer King Pele football tournament, conducted by Tiruchi District Football Association, here on Thursday.

Shyam Sundar and Lewin Prabhu scored for the winner.
