NEW DELHI: For the second straight day, the Indian Grandmaster duo of Parimarjan Negi and Abhijeet Gupta scored vital victories to inch closer to the medal bracket in the open category while D. Harika regained sole lead in the girls’ section after the 11th round of the World junior chess championship at Gaziantep, Turkey, on Tuesday. Playing black, Parimarjan (8 points) upset sixth-seeded Chinese GM Li Chao in 64 moves to share the second spot with five others including Abhijeet, who scalped Hungarian International Master Denes Boros in 32 moves. Two more rounds remain. Germany’s Arik Braun defeated Filipino wonder-kid Wesley So to lead the field at 8.5 points after Vietnamese Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son stunned overnight leader second seed Israel’s Maxim Rodshtein in just 29 moves. Among the girls, Harika won with white pieces against Turkey’s Kubra Ozturk to reach nine points, half a point ahead of the second-seeded Ukrainian Mariya Mmuzychuk.
