For a cleaner city: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin watching a demonstration of one of compactor vehicles in Chennai on Wednesday. — Chennai: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday said two new municipal Corporations — one in the north and another in south of Chennai — would be created after holding public consultations. Mr. Stalin told reporters that the municipal corporations would be formed before the next local body elections. A committee headed by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority vice-chairperson had submitted its report recommending the creation of two municipal corporations to govern the growing city suburbs. The State government was currently evaluating the report, which examines issues of governance to improve infrastructure in the city’s suburbs. Compactor trucks commissionedMr. Stalin commissioned 10 compactor trucks for garbage collection in the zones where solid waste is cleared by the Chennai Corporation. Each truck costs Rs.19.31 lakh. Of the 80 compactor trucks that the Corporation has decided to add to its fleet of garbage collection vehicles, 37 have been bought and deployed. The 10 new trucks have raised the number to 47 and more compactor trucks would be bought soon. Chennai Corporation officials said the trucks would be more efficient than open lorries. Mr. Stalin also commissioned seven jeeps for the use of Corporation officials. He said the beautification of the Marina beach would be completed by December. The walkways would be laid with anti-slip tiles, he added.
