30th anniversary celebrations of Sankara Nethralaya on September 6

Chief Minister has been requested to inaugurate new research building


CHENNAI: The 30th anniversary of the founding of Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, is being celebrated on September 6.

Experts from Nano-medicine, stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, epidemiology, proteomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, gene therapy, bio-engineering, bio-informatics, and microbiology will attend the international conference on “Nano-medicine and Recent Advances in Ophthalmic Research” being organised from September 3 to 5 as part of the celebrations.

Some of the key international speakers are Larry Nagahara from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer, U.S., who oversees the development of promising diagnostics and therapeutics projects and helps to turn them into applications that will eventually benefit cancer patients; J.W. Bainbridge from the Institute of Ophthalmology, U.K., who is part of a group which recently performed successful gene therapy for Retinitis Pigmentosa patients; and Iqbal Ahmed from the University of Nebraska, who is a pioneer in corneal and retinal stem cell research.

Experts in nano-medicine

Experts in the field of nano-medicine who will be in Chennai are William Crist from the University of Missouri, U.S. and Anil K. Patri from the NCI, U.S. Samuel J.K. Abraham from Yamanashi University, Japan, and Shailesh Kaushal from the University of Florida, U.S., both experts in tissue engineering, will also be making presentations during the conference.

A photo exhibition has been arranged at the “Image Auditorium,” MRC Nagar. At the same venue a cultural programme is being organised in the evening. Dr. S.S. Badrinath, president and Chairman Emeritus, Medical Research Foundation, said the Chief Minister had been requested to inaugurate the new research building on a convenient date.
