HYDERABAD: Gouru Venkat Reddy, husband of Nandikotkur Congress MLA G. Charita Reddy, is likely to figure in the list of the 317 convicts being released from jail on remission of the sentence, marking the 62nd Independence Day celebrations on Friday. Governor N. D. Tiwari gave his assent on Thursday to the government’s proposal to release 317 prisoners serving the sentence in various jails in the State on remission in tune with the continuing tradition. Home Minister K. Jana Reddy told media persons that the proposal to release these prisoners on remission was made in line with the recommendations made by the State Level Committee headed by the Inspector-General, Prisons. The committee had identified the beneficiaries “based on the criteria specified”. The twin benefits of remission and release were allowed only in case of non-lifers under the existing guidelines if they served half of their sentence by now. The other criterion included good behaviour shown while serving the sentence. They were rendered ineligible if they committed crime against women and attracted provisions of the Scheduled Castes & Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Arms Act. The Minister did not clearly indicate if Gouru Venkat Reddy would be released but made it clear that he too was eligible as he fulfilled the conditions. An order issued by the Home Department containing the names of these beneficiaries, was kept a closely guarded secret till late night. Action criticisedControversy always surrounded Venkat Reddy. The government action was criticised when he was released on remission by a special order in 2004 two months after the government decided to grant remission to 1,050 convicts by a common order.
