Good fortune: Collector R. Vasuki interacting with a farmer at the Uzhavar Santhai in Dindigul.
DINDIGUL: From now on, farmers who have shops in Uzhavar Santhai here need not wait in the corridors of banks at their village to open savings bank accounts or deposit their savings.
For the first time, primary agricultural cooperative banks have come to their doorstep to open savings accounts and also collect their savings every day.
To begin with, the Dindigul Central Cooperative Bank facilitated opening of savings bank accounts for farmers in Uzhavar Santhai here on Monday. It will depute its staff members to collect money from them every day.
This system would be introduced to all farmers in the market. After successful implementation in Dindigul, it would be extended to the farmers’ market in Palani, said Collector R. Vasuki.
Bank staff would meet farmers at the market at a particular time to collect the money.
They would issue receipts on the spot for deposits. Such an exercise would not only inculcate savings habit among farmers but also provide easy access to all banking services.
The Collector handed over savings account pass books to new account holders on Thursday.
