Sharath, Humpy to receive award

CHENNAI: The Raja-Lakshmi award for the year 2008 will be presented to table tennis player Sharath Kamal and chess player Koneru Humpy on November 19 in the city, a release from the Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation said.

The award carries prize money of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a memento. The awardees will also receive the Dr. K.V. Rao and Dr. Jyoti Rao award of $2,000 in association with the Telugu Fine Arts Society, New Jersey.

St.John’s, Vidya Mandir triumph

St. John’s and Vidya Mandir clinched the boys’ and girls’ team titles respectively in the JVS Rao Memorial inter-school table tennis tournament at Hall of TT, Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

The results (finals):

Team championships: Boys: St. John’s bt PSBB (Nungambakkam) ‘A’ 3-1; Girls: Vidya Mandir bt SBOA 3-1.

Boys: Upto VI Std.: M. Anirudh (Asan Memorial) bt D. Ananth (Vidya Mandir) 11-9, 15-13, 11-6; Upto VIII Std.: R. Anandhraj (Don Bosco, Perambur) bt Shashank S. Yogesh (Vidya Mandir) 11-4,11-4,13-11; Upto X Std.: D. Kishore Kumar (ST) bt Shreyas Chander (St. John’s) 11-6,13-11,11-9; Upto XII Std.: S. Prasanna (PSBB, N) bt Ajay Bharadwaj (PSBB, N) 5-11,11-9,12-10,11-7.

Girls: Upto VI Std.: C.R. Harshavardhini (MVM) bt G. Aishwarya Ravi (PSBB, N) 2-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-2; Upto VIII Std.: Amrutha Pushpak (Chettinad) bt R. Ke. SRM wins title

SRM Arts and Science College (Kattankalathur), with a tally of 23.5 points, won the University of Madras Zone ‘A’ chess tournament for men at the SRM Arts and Science College in Kattankalathur on Thursday.

Loyola College finished second with 20 points, followed Shri Shankar Arts and Science College with 20 points. Fifteen colleges, fielding 60 players in all, took part in the two-day tournament.

Viswajit in final

Viswajit Tirumurti stormed into the final of the ABI-Showatech-KTC (u-18) tennis tournament on Thursday, beating Mohd. Niyaz in straight sets. He takes on V. Sudharsan in the title round.

In the girls’ singles, Nandita Krishnan beat Preethi Srinivasan to set up a title clash with P.S. Sindu Nila.

The results: (semifinals): Boys’ singles: Viswajit Tirumurti bt Mohd. Niyaz 6-2, 6-0; V. Sudharsan bt B. Soorya Prashanth 6-3, 7-6.

Girls’ singles: Nandita Krishnan bt Preethi Srinivasan 6-1, 6-3; P.S. Sindu Nila bt B. Nithya Raj 7-5, 6-4.

Govt. HSS, Kathivakkam boys reign

Government HSS, Kathivakkam, won the overall championship in the boys’ section and IHM Matriculation HSS, Avadi, bagged the honours in the girls section in the Thiruvallur Olympiad conducted by the Rotary International District 3230 in association with the SDAT.More than 1600 students participated in the Olympiad.
