Tight security at Parade Ground

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The police have made unprecedented security arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations on Friday at Secunderabad Parade Ground in the backdrop of increased threat perception following recent serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Huge contingents of different police wings were being deployed in and around the Parade Ground for peaceful conduct of the celebrations as scores of VVIPs would be present, City Police Commissioner B. Prasada Rao told a press conference on Thursday.

Checking of vehicles and subjecting commuters to frisking were started a week ago and further intensified.

Over 100 officers, 10 platoons of Armed Reserve policemen, two Quick Response teams and two units of Commissioner’s Task Force were deployed at the Secunderabad Parade Ground. Equipped with deep search mine detectors, under carriage mirrors and explosive vapour detector, anti-sabotage teams were continuously checking public places across the city.

Extensive vehicle checking was undertaken at all entry points into the city. The Commissioner said that Interactive Voice Response (I.V.R.) system would be installed in the main police control room to attend to calls from people. He conceded that technical problems relating to the toll-free police number 100 sometimes resulted in delayed response from police to calls made by the public.

Mr. Rao released VCDs of shortened version of Meri Jaan -- a film on security precautions to be adopted at public places -- for launching massive security campaign.
