Those shopping for puja items have

a tough time

Travellers face chaos at Majestic bus station

BANGALORE: Bangalore on Thursday received more than 5 cm rainfall that inundated all arterial roads, dampened the Varamahalakshmi shopping spree and threw traffic out of gear throughout the city towards evening.

By the time the downpour had spent itself around 11.30 p.m., the city had received 53.5 mm rainfall while the HAL Airport had received 56.2 mm.

Varamahalakshmi is on Friday and thousands of women were buying the puja items on Thursday.

The Krishna Rajendra Market and local markets in Gandhi Bazar, Malleswaram, Jayanagar IX Block, Ulsoor, Basaveshwaranagar and other places came alive with women shopping for plantain shoots and leaves, fruits and other puja items till around 6 p.m.

However, they, as well as the sellers, had to run for cover once the heavens opened. Meanwhile, Bangaloreans hit by the travel bug and intent on making full use of the extended weekend had a harrowing time in reaching the Central Bus Station and City Railway Station in Majestic.

The usual pre-weekend traffic jam around Majestic was compounded by the heavy rain, which made the situation worse.

Almost all arterial roads, including Bellary Road, Jayamahal Road, Tumkur Road, Lalbagh Road, Hosur Road, Mysore Road, Bannerghatta Road, J.C. Road, N.R. Road, K.R. Road, Sampige Road, Seshadripuram Main Road and Race Course Road witnessed either a gridlock or voluminous traffic moving at a snail’s pace.

Luckily, no flooding was reported except at a few places because of overflowing storm water drains.

The 10th A Cross in Ejipura was blocked because of an overflowing drain as was the Vibhutipura Main Road.

No casualties were reported except for some fallen branches and trees.
