Reaching out on I-Day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Remya and her family will remember this Independence Day as one that gave her a new lease of life. A Class V student, this speech and hearing impaired girl who also suffers from a heart disease was one of the 11 beneficiaries selected by the Kshema Social Circle of the State Bank of Travancore, Zonal Office, for financial assistance this year.

The list of beneficiaries included victims of chronic diseases, terminally ill patients, physically challenged persons and students from indigent families seeking assistance for education. They included Bhargavi Amma, a cancer victim living in a small thatched hut with no one to support her; A. Omana, a chronic breast cancer patient with no livelihood and the burden of looking after two children and a husband who is also bed ridden; A.R. Aswathy, another speech and hearing impaired girl and a heart patient doing her second year in BA Sociology; Silpa, a young heart patient who has to fend for her ailing mother and V. Sreekumaran Nair, a bed- ridden paralytic patient struggling to find the means to support his wife and aged mother.

M. Radhakrishna Pillai, patron of the Matha Vanitha Charitable Society, Pettah also received financial aid to carry on his mission of providing free noon meals to the destitute patients housed in Ward no.9 at the General Hospital here.

The assistance was distributed at a function organised in connection with the Independence Day celebrations at the SBT zonal office. Deputy General Manager Joseph V. Mathew hoisted the national flag and distributed the assistance and study materials for students.
