Sabarimala temple opens today

PATHANAMTHITTA: Sabarimala Tantri (chief priest) Kandararu Rajeevaru of Thazhamon Madhom at Kallisserry, near Chengannur, will be performing the tantric rituals at the Lord Ayyappa Temple for the next one year period from Chingom 1 that begins on Sunday.

The priesthood at the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple has been traditionally vested with the Thazhamon Brahmin family, which has two branches.

The families are being headed by the senior Tantri, Kandararu Maheswararu, and his nephew, Kandararu Rajeevaru.

Internal arrangement

As per an internal arrangement, the family heads have been undertaking the tantric duty at Sabarimala in alternate years.

The one-year-term of Kandararu Maheswararu ends on Saturday, the last day in the Malayalam month of Karkidakom, and Rajeevaru will undertake the year-long tantric duty at Sabarimala on the Malayalam new year day on Sunday.

Melsanthi T.K. Krishnan Namboodiri will open the Ayyappa temple at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday for the five-day monthly puja in the Malayalam month of Chingom.

Rituals

The rituals will begin with the Tantri performing Ashtadravya Maha Ganapati Homom on Sunday morning. According to the Tantri, a Laksharchana will be performed on the day. Sahasrakalasabhishekom, Kalabhabhishekom, Padipuja and Pushpabhishekom will be the other important rituals on Sunday.

Padipuja, Udayasthamanapuja and Pushpabhishekom will be held at the temple on all the five days and the temple will be closed after the monthly puja on August 21 evening.

Onam festival

The Ayyappa temple will reopen on September 10 afternoon for the Onam festival. The rituals will begin on September 11 morning and the temple will be closed after the Athazhapuja on September 14 evening.
