Urges people to resist threats of fundamentalists and American imperialists Claims government has drawn up projects beneficial for the common man MALAPPURAM: The Independence Day parade held at the Malabar Special Police (MSP) grounds here on Friday attracted large crowds from different places. People made it to the venue well before the parade began at 8 a.m. Minister for Law, Parliamentary, Sports and Youth Affairs M. Vijayakumar took the salute as 24 platoons comprising battalions of the MSP, local Armed Reserve, local police, National Cadet Corps (NCC) belonging to senior and junior wings; and Scouts and Guides marched past to the tune of band music. The Minister hoisted the tricolour after the parade. Delivering his Independence Day message, Mr. Vijayakumar said that American new-age colonialism and extremist threat were the two dangers facing the country today. He called upon the people to equip themselves to resist the threats of both fundamentalists and American imperialists. He said the government had made great advances in chalking out projects beneficial for the common man. He cited the Muslim scholarships and reservation for backward classes in the cooperative sector as two examples of the government’s benefaction. Mr. Vijayakumar exhorted the youth to follow the footsteps of Abhinav Bindra, who did India proud by bagging an Olympic gold in shooting. The Minister said the youth should set their ambitions high. Among those who watched the parade were District Panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed; M. Ummer, MLA; District Collector M.C. Mohandas; District Superintendent of Police P. Vijayan; Malappuram Municipal Chairman Kiliyamannil Yakoob; CPI(M) district secretary K. Ummer; former Muslim Youth League president Sayed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal; and District Information Officer P. Kunhabdulla. The Minister gave away trophies to the battalions that excelled in the parade. Chief Minister’s police medals to 11 sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, head constables and constables were given away at the function.
