General alert over I-Day fete in Cuddalore, Villupuram

VILLUPURAM: Independence Day was celebrated with traditional gaiety and fervour, but with a note of caution, in Villupuram and Cuddalore districts on Friday. A general alert was kept at the venues till the completion of the event.

At Villupuram, District Collector R.Palanisamy unfurled the national flag and took the salute at the police parade grounds. He honoured 69 freedom fighters by adorning them with shawls and giving away mementos, and, disbursed assistance worth over Rs 3.98 lakh to 116 beneficiaries.

The Collector also presented medals to the police personnel, the government drivers who had accident-free record and those who rendered laudable social services. Deputy Inspector-General of Police E.Ma.Maasanamuthu, Superintendent of Police A.Amalraj, District Revenue Officer C.Kadhiravan and others participated.

Students from eight schools staged cultural programmes and of them the 350-member troupe from A.K.T.Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kallakurichi, emerged at the top.

Sakthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School bagged the second prize for graphically portraying national integration, and the John Dewey Matriculation Higher Secondary School walked away with third prize for showcasing “Bright and prosperous India.”

Gram sabha meeting

Later, Mr. Palanisamy attended the gram sabha meeting at Pagandai and enquired the participants whether they were paid due wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. In Cuddalore, District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo took the salute and hoisted the National Flag. Besides honouring the freedom fighters the Collector also disbursed aid worth over Rs 49.45 lakh to 437 beneficiaries.

Later, the Collector attended the gram sabha meeting at Chithirai Chavadi in Kanisapakkam Panchayat Union.
