Kakinada: An impressive parade by the police and NCC cadets and cultural performances by schoolchildren marked the 62nd Independence Day celebrations at the police grounds here on Friday. Children danced to the tunes of patriotic songs to which audience gave thunderous applause. The dance item of physically challenged children of Uma Mano Vikasa Kendram left the participants spell-bound.

Minister for Small Industries Gollapalli Surya Rao who hoisted the national flag as chief guest, Zilla Parishad chairman Ch Venugopala Krishna, Kakinada MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna, district Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi, Joint Collector GSRKR Vijay Kumar, Superintendent of Police Y Nagi Reddy and other dignitaries appreciated the varied talents of children and hoped that their skills would be nurtured with the same zeal hereafter.

Minister Surya Rao recollected the invaluable contribution made by Maharshi Bulusu Samba Murthy, Madduri Annapoornaiah, Vadrevu Jaggaraju and Krovvidi Lingaraju etc to the freedom movement and called upon the present generation to strive to realize the dreams of such stalwarts who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the nation.

Mr. Rao dwelt at length on the progress achieved in East Godavari and exuded confidence that the district would make rapid strides in the years ahead due to the policies of the State Government which was doing its best for people’s welfare.

He asserted that irrigation projects were a boon not only to the district but the entire State as vast areas of agricultural lands would get water throughout the year in addition to the land currently under cultivation.

Crop loans

Crop loans amounting to Rs 533 crores were written off to extricate farmers from crisis (loan waiver benefited 2.5 lakh farmers).

Steps were taken to streamline credit delivery to help them in carrying out farm operations without resorting to borrowings at hefty rates from private money lenders. Twenty-nine new industries which could provide employment to 4,000 persons, were in the pipeline. More industrialists were keen on foraying into the district, mainly Kakinada and Rajahmundry.
