New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday mourned 11 people, including seven schoolchildren, who drowned when a school bus fell into a river near Mangalore on Thursday. Dr. Singh announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the families of the dead and Rs. 50,000 to each of the injured, an official statement said here. — PTI ‘Heartbreaking’Udupi Staff Correspondent writes: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has also mourned the deaths. In a press release on Friday, Ms. Gandhi said, “I am deeply grieved to learn of the terrible tragedy involving a school van carrying small children near Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada on August 14 morning. “It is heartbreaking that many young lives were lost in this unfortunate accident. “At a time like this, words are of little consolation, but I want the families of all those who have lost their loved ones to know that I share their pain and sorrow with all my heart. I pray that they may find strength to bear this loss,” Ms. Gandhi said.
