Kalpana Chawla award for Kanyakumari Collector

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday presented the Kalpana Chawla award to Kanyakumari district Collector B. Jothi Nirmala for exhibiting exemplary courage while discharging her duties.

The award, given on the occasion of the 62nd Independence Day celebrations at Fort St. George, carried a gold medal and Rs.5 lakh cash.

“When she was the Revenue Divisional Officer of Padmanabhapuram she directly visited river beds and put an end to the menace of sand smugglers and sand smuggling. In the face of threats, she acted bravely to defuse communal tension and controlled thefts, bootlegging and drugs,” the government said. The Chief Minister also gave awards for exemplary service for the welfare of the physically challenged.

The State government’s best Disabled Rehabilitation officer award went to C. Manimaran of Krishnagiri district. Mohan Rajan of Rajan Eye Care hospital received the best doctor award. The awards included a gold medal and a certificate.

The Best Social Worker (Disabled Welfare) award was given to R. Thangam, member of the Tamil Nadu Welfare Board for the Disabled Persons. Best Social Worker (Women Welfare) was given to G. Revathi Mohan. The awards comprised a gold medal and certificate.

The award for Best Institution (Disabled Welfare) went to St. Annes Special School, Tiruchi. Likewise the Best Institution (Women Welfare) was given to Rural Education for Action and Development Agency (READ) in Dindigul district. The awardees received a gold medal, a certificate and Rs. 50,000 each.

The Chief Minister also distributed sweets to physically challenged children.
