BANGALORE: Governor Rameshwar Thakur felicitated 10 individuals and two organisations for achievements in their respective fields on the occasion of the Independence Day on Friday. The achievers were presented with a garland, a shawl, a citation and a fruit basket at a simple function held at the Banquet Hall at the Raj Bhavan. For the past eight years, successive Governors have been felicitating achievers from various fields on Independence Day. The first to receive the honour were two visually-challenged brothers from Bangalore — Abdullah Hussian and Nazeer Hussian. The siblings had scored 87 and 80 per cent marks, respectively, in the SSLC examinations held in March 2008. Besides, the two have been actively participating in sports and other extra-curricular activities. The youngest of the achievers was S. Tejas, a Class 7 student of Florence High School in Basaveshwaranagar, Bangalore. The “arithmetic wizard” can recount tables from one to 10,000 and he has entered the Limca Book of Records. EntrepreneurUma, proprietor of Uma Knitting and Training Centre located in Avenue Road, was felicitated for her achievements as an independent entrepreneur. Physically-challenged Uma received special treatment through Spastics Society of India before she set up her enterprise. She is not only a master craftsman in woollen handicrafts but has also trained many others. M.H.R. Dalavi of Bangalore, who has organised hundreds of free health check-ups, eye surgery, blood donation and de-addiction camps, was also honoured. B. Kumar, a public relations officer with a Bangalore-based hospital, was honoured for saving several lives by donating blood 98 times in the past 25 years, and also for organising blood donation camps. He collected 50 bottles of blood on the day of his marriage. M. Rajanna, an amateur photographer from Kanteervanagar in Bangalore, successfully transformed a mentally disturbed man, who was roaming in Nandini Layout and was drinking water from drains, into a sane person. Mr. Rajanna also reunited the man with his family. The Governor felicitated Mr. Rajanna in recognition of his service towards the distressed. Oldest achieverThe oldest among those who received the honour was 82-year-old Karaga Nanjamma from Ramasamudra village in Chamarajanagar district. For the past 40 years she has been popularising Sobhane Padagalu, a folk art form. Gamaki Ramdas (79), a retired teacher who also hails from Ramasamudra, was felicitated for popularising Gamaka. Another winner, Yeshoda Vitthal Rao Gujjar from Bijapur district, is the President of Rathna Mahila Mandal, which provides job opportunities to hundreds of rural women by training them in tailoring and jute and woollen handicrafts. Ms. Gujjar has also trained 625 prisoners at Bijapur Central Jail in jute handicrafts. InstitutionsThe two institutions that bagged awards were Chaitanya Mandira of Hassan and Keerthi Creations of Bangalore. Chaitanya Mandira, headed by Gururaj Hebbar, has been providing free accommodation to destitute and elderly people. It also provides shelter for stray cattle. Keerthi Creations was felicitated for creating public awareness on various social issues through its hoarding at the Manjula Mantapa at T. Siddalingaiah Circle near Cubbon Park.
