Teleconferencing proves useful in emergency situation

BANGALORE: The newly launched teleconferencing facility in the office of Director-General and Inspector-General of Police R. Sri Kumar came in handy in coordinating the rescue operations after a school bus fell into the Gurupur river near Mangalore on Thursday.

Even as the facility was inaugurated by Mr. Kumar, it was used to oversee the flood relief operations across the State. Mr. Kumar was in touch with Principal Secretary (Revenue) D. Thangaraj and Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of 10 districts.
During the teleconferencing, Mr. Kumar and Mr. Thangaraj monitored the progress of the flood relief works in Belgaum, Bijapur, Chikmagalur, Mysore, Hassan, Gulbarga, Haveri, Shimoga and Mandya.
Director-General of Police and Director of Fire and Emergency Services Jija Madhavan Hari Singh, who took part in the teleconferencing, was asking about preparedness and frequency of evacuation drills.
