CHENNAI: Scriptures are held to be authoritative sources of knowledge regarding the created universe and its creator. Saint Tirumoolar’s Tirumandiram is a record of scriptural truths rendered in Tamil language and includes the subtle knowledge of philosophy, theology, devotion, mysticism, yoga, etc., said Sri T. V. Venkataraman in a lecture. God realisation is possible only on experiential terms, and this sacred text reveals the magnificence of God’s infinite glory in a language that even ordinary people can relate to. Though most of us are aware of some greater force directing us, we are not sure of the truth of our existence and do not know where we are heading. It is only by repeated questionings about one’s origin and the basis of one’s existence, faculties, nature, form, etc., that one turns inward to recognise the subtle Self dwelling inside the gross body. Saint Tirumoolar highlights the importance of this quest that is necessary in the pursuit of the Supreme Truth. This saint acknowledges in all humility that God used him as an instrument to reveal His Truth. In the process he was able to experience the bliss of God realisation. This bliss, once experienced, renders irrelevant all what seemed to be relevant in the course of worldly life including scholarship and learning. The Self’s true nature is camouflaged by the attractions of the external world and only conscious effort can help to remove these enveloping layers. This knowledge is beyond the grasp of the senses. When an individual understands this truth and of the soul’s immortal relationship with God, this inner brilliance of the Lord begins to illuminate his actions, speech and thoughts. When this truth becomes the guiding force, one is able to cultivate the ability to see God’s hidden presence in all places and at all times. This knowledge helps one to overcome the trap of ego that easily blinds us to God’s presence. In this state we realise that sincerity alone is important in one’s relationship with God. This is practice of Yoga or penance. Meditation on the Supreme Being, who is beyond the five elements, is penance.
