Corrections and clarifications

* The first sentence in “The numbers game” (Editorial, August 15, 2008) was “On February 18, a small movement in the men’s rankings will usher in a tectonic shift in the world of tennis.” It should have been “August 18”.

* * A report “‘States must not cut allocation for education’” (August 15, 2008) spelt the name of Minister of State for Human Resource Development as Ms. D. Purandareswari in the caption of the accompanying photograph and paragraph one, but gave it as Ms. Purandeswari in paragraph three, leading to queries. We repeat the clarification we issued on April 9, 2008. “The website of the Prime Minister’s Office (under ‘PM’s Team – Ministers of State’) gives the name of Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development as Mrs D. Purandareswari. Staff in the office and residence of the minister clarify that her official name is Mrs Daggubati Purandeswari. This column has earlier clarified that ‘Purandareswari’ is correct. Now, both variations appear to be valid.”

At the same time, there has to be uniformity in the spelling in a report.

* * A report “20 dead, 21 injured in Mumbai building collapse” (August 14, 2008) did not mention where it had happened in Mumbai. The Special Correspondent clarifies that it was at Durgadevi Street, Kumbharwada, near Gol deul in Bhendi Bazaar.

* * An incorrect shoulder was used in a report “Second win for Chinese women” (“Olympics – Sport”, August 14, 2008). As the text said, it should have been “Basketball” instead of “Baseball”.
