Schools and colleges hoist tricolour Competitions and cultural events conducted CUTTACK: The 62nd Independence Day was celebrated with pomp and gaiety across the district on Friday. The main function of the district was held at the Reserve Police Ground here where the State Industries and Law Minister Biswabhusan Harichandan took the salute of an impressive parade after hoisting the National Flag. Barred by the election code of conduct imposed for the ensuing municipal polls in the State, the Minister limited his speech paying rich tributes to the freedom fighters of the State by highlighting their achievements. He said progresses made in various fields have now helped India to occupy a unique place in the world. Successes in economy, science and research have brought laurels to the country while efforts are now being made to utilise these successes in achieving more development in other fields, he said. Speaking on the importance of Indian Constitution, the Law Minister said India’s democracy has now become more vibrant and the country has become stronger and mature. “People now have great faith in the democratic set up of the country”, the minister said. Besides the district-level celebration, the Independence Day was celebrated in all schools, colleges, Ravenshaw University and the State High Court. The inmates of Choudwar Jail also celebrated the Independence Day with honour and pride after hoisting the tricolour inside the jail premises. Earlier in the day, hundreds of school children moved across the city singing patriotic songs and gathered at their respective schools to hoist the National Flag. Various competitions and tournaments were held in the afternoon while cultural programmes in the evening marked the Independence Day celebrations in the city. At least 20 contingents of armed police, various wings of NCC, scout and civilians including school and college children took part in the I-Day parade. On the occasion, the Minister gave away prizes and trophies to the winners of various competitions organised by the district administration.
