A show of freedom

Kolkata: A dozen HIV-affected people, including women and children, on Friday took part in an Independence day rally in Purulia district of West Bengal in a show of freedom from social taboos.

The rally, also attended by public representatives, government officials, aid workers and school children, started from Victoria School at the centre of Purulia town and ended at the main square near the Collectorate office.

Purulia has a high prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS.

“Men from Purulia go to work in Mumbai and other distant industrial areas and get infected with the virus. The women get infected by their husbands and bear HIV-positive children,” District Coordinator of UNICEF-supported HIV/AIDS project Rupa Kundu said.

UNICEF’s Bengal representative Lori Calvo held the participation of the HIV-affected in the rally a “significant” step in the fight against the stigma attached with the infection. PTI
