New Delhi: Foreseeing heavy rush on the capital’s streets on Saturday on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, Delhi Police have appealed to Delhiites to use public transport rather than own vehicles. “We are anticipating heavy traffic especially during the evening hours as people are likely to go to their relatives’ places to greet them on the occasion. We request people to use public transport so that the pressure on roads is minimised,” a senior police official said. The official said adequate steps have been taken to regulate traffic across the city. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has announced that women need not pay ticket fare on Saturday in its buses till 5 p.m. The Delhi Metro will also run three extra trains on ‘Rakshabandhan Day.’ In addition, one train will be kept as a standby on each of the three routes to handle any unexpected pressure and additional personnel will also be deployed for handling the extra pressure on the ticket counters. Besides, the DMRC will deploy more customer facilitation agents to help and guide the commuters. “The DMRC witnesses about one lakh extra commuters every year on this occasion. Last year, 7.2 lakh passengers travelled by the Metro against an average of 6 lakh normally in that year,” a Delhi Metro spokesperson said. PTI
