CHANDIGARH: Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Director K.K. Talwar on Friday unfurled the national flag at the Institute’s campus here and celebrated the Independence Day along with the faculty, nursing, administrative and other staff. He said it is a matter of pride that today India is a powerful democracy and a free nation. And it is fast moving towards economic freedom. He added that the PGIMER was a leader in disseminating medical knowledge. He said the PGI had launched the telemedicine initiative and was the first medical Institute to launch tele-education and e-health programmes in remote areas of the country. The Institute had been sanctioned Rs.625 crore in the 11th five year plan which would be used in modernising Nehru Hospital with an additional block of 250 beds, a cancer unit and expansion of facilities in the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Renal transplant. Also, the Positron emission tomography Scan and Gamma Knife would be functional in the next few months. The Advanced Cardiac Centre, Advanced Trauma Centre and computerisation of the institute were all in advanced stages of completion. A new facility for stem cell research had been established and research was being done in the fields of genomics, nanotechnology, liver and cadaver organ transplant. ‘Pledge to work hard’Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur unfurled the national flag at a function on the High Court premises. Judges, former judges, senior advocates, Advocate-Generals of Punjab and Haryana; judicial officers and officials of the Court were present. Mr. Justice Thakur said Independence Day was a day of introspection and “we should take a pledge to work harder and with zeal.” Talking about the 2,60,000 cases pending in the High Court, he said he had discussed the problem with other judges and they had assured him to work long hours and even on Saturdays to clear the backlog. He also exhorted the judicial officers to dispose of the cases expeditiously. He said he had asked the Chandigarh administration to create more infrastructure in terms of the Court rooms and houses for the Judges. VC for team spiritPunjab University also celebrated the Independence Day with V-C R.C. Sobti hoisting the national flag. He said the need of the hour was to develop team spirit, commitment and zest for profession to overcome crises. He said the PU had overhauled the examination system and there was transparency in internal assessments. The University would be computerised soon as the endeavour was to “become globally competitive and nationally distinctive.”
