Rainfall deficit narrows down

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Matters are improving with the Kerala monsoon. The latest rainfall update of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows the State inching its way up from a position of long deficit.

From 33 per cent a fortnight ago, the rainfall deficit has come down to 27 per cent for the State for the period till August 13 from June 1. Idukki district, which has the major hydro-power reservoirs in the State, is only 15 per cent deficient in rainfall.

The State, however, slipped from fourth to the second position among the rainfall-deficient meteorological divisions in the country during the fortnight. Only four divisions are in the list of rainfall-deficient ones. The one behind Kerala is Marathwada with 37 per cent deficit, while the other two divisions are in the north-east.

The following is the district-wise position, the figures in the brackets showing the rainfall deficit: Thiruvananthapuram (38), Kollam (22), Pathanamthitta (10), Alappuzha (16), Kottayam (29), Idukki (15), Ernakulam (33), Thrissur (34), Palakkad (27), Malappuram (34), Kozhikode (25), Wayanad (52), Kannur (28) and Kasaragod (17).
