Mathur villagers plead for a new girls’ school in Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: The plight of girl students walking one km to reach their high school at Mathur on the Tiruchi–Pudukottai National Highway, was discussed at length by villagers who participated in the ‘Grama Sabha’ meeting near here on Friday.

They said that the students underwent an ordeal daily to reach the school and return to the hostel located near Avoor.

Village panchayat president G. Pazhaniammal Govindaraj, who presided over the meeting, said that there were about 300 girls in the hostel. There was a strong case for constructing a new girls’ high school at the vacant site on the hostel premises, she said.

The meeting adopted a resolution urging the Education Department to take immediate action in this regard.

The villagers also expressed their concern over the poor condition of roads in the village. The meeting adopted a resolution pleading for construction of an additional overhead tank to augment the supply of drinking water.

Gram sabha meetings were held in 498 village panchayats in the district. Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar inspected the meeting proceedings at Poongudi village near Annavasal.

She informed the villagers that a sum of Rs. 60.75 lakh would be spent for improving the irrigational and storage capacity of five tanks in and around Poongudi.

She also assured them that steps would be taken to provide additional town bus facility for the village.

Nagapattinam

Gram sabha meetings were convened by the panchayat presidents in all the 434 village panchayats in the district who discussed with the people about the infrastructure and basic amenities required there.

Collector M. Jayaraman took part at the gram sabha meeting in Manjakollai village near Nagapattinam and administered AIDS awareness pledge to the people. He said that a cement road would be provided at a cost of Rs.5.81 lakh in the village. He also discussed the various basic amenities required there.

The Collector pointed out that poor agricultural workers and other casual workers in the district would be provided work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme.

Voters list inclusion

Mr. Jayaraman appealed to the people to include the names of those who had completed 18 years of age on January 1 this year in the voters list before August 28. K.Arunmani, Project Officer, DRDA and other officials attended the meeting.

Perambalur

Implementation of various government schemes, including the NREGP, was reviewed at the gram sabha meetings held across the district on Friday.

The sabhas in 121 village panchayats also audited the village accounts. Collector Anil Meshram attended the meeting at Sencheri and instructed the officials to ensure that villagers verified the inclusion of their names in the draft electoral rolls.

Special camps would be held on Sunday to receive applications for inclusions, deletions and corrections and residents should utilise the opportunity, he said.

V. Natarajan, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, and other officials supervised the meetings in various parts of the district.

Thanjavur

National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme was implemented successfully in Thanjavur district, said Collector M. S. Shanmugham here on Friday.

Participating in the Gram sabha meeting at Madigai village in Thanjavur panchayat union, he said that hundred days’ employment was provided under the scheme. In Madigai village, there are 1,300 eligible persons out of whom 570 got work.

Under the scheme, a 150 feet concrete road at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh would be laid in the village. Laying of roads to Adi Dravidar Colony and Shanthi Colony cremation ground have been taken upThe Collector said that Rs. 20 lakh worth of works had been taken up under Anaithu Anna Marumalarchi scheme in the village. They include fixing street lights, starting fish rearing, extension of drinking water pipeline, and laying a sports ground.

Minister for Commercial Taxes S. N. M. Ubayathullah participated in the Gram sabha meeting at Melaveli and Rajendram pachayats in the union. At Madigai, he said that he was allotting Rs. 6 lakh from his MLA’s local area development fund for taking up development works.

Tiruvarur

Gram sabha meetings were held in all village panchayats in Tiruvarur district also. Collector M. Chandrasekaran participated at Pulivalam near Tiruvarur.
