LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday laid stress on establishing a social system based on equality. The Chief Minister said independence can become more meaningful only when the people were assured that they could live in peace and honour and were able to tide over their problems. The social and economic freedom of the people was more important, she added. Addressing the gathering after hoisting the Tri-colour in front of the Vidhan Bhawan on the occasion of Independence Day, Ms. Mayawati said through the policy of ‘sarvjan hitaiya, sarvjan sukhaiya’ her Government had endeavoured to fulfil the aspirations of the people. The Chief Minister said top priority has been accorded to providing a secure environment to the people and creating an environment of development through the rule of law. An administration which was sensitive and responsive towards the needs of the people was another plus point of her regime, Ms. Mayawati emphasised. She said keeping in view the interests of the deprived and downtrodden sections of the population, the Bahujan Samaj Party Government had launched a special drive for giving ‘pattas’ on Gram Sabha land. For the first time, unmarried girls have been given the right to a share in their father’s agricultural property with this decision being taken in the interests of the ‘sarv samaj’, the Chief Minister said. Stating that steps had been taken for the development of villages, urban regeneration and providing basic amenities to the people, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said notwithstanding the Central Government’s non-cooperation, the State Government had implemented short and long term plans for the development of Purvanchal and Bundelkhand regions of the State. Ms. Mayawati said a law had been framed for safeguarding the interests of the poor farmers and prevent their harassment. She said a new awareness had been created and new direction to socio-political change given by the concept of ‘sarvjan hitaiya, sarvjan sukhaiya’. The Chief Minister paid tributes to all the freedom fighters and recalled the contributions of Jyotiba Phule, Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj, Narayan Guru, Bhimrao Ambedkar and her mentor, Kanshi Ram. Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh while greeting the people on Independence Day said the dream of social equality was becoming a reality under the stewardship of the Chief Minister. The ADG, Law and Order, Brij Lal, SSP, Special Task Force, Amitabh Yash, ASP, Ghaziabad, Vijay Bhushan and civil police inspector of Agra, Jagdish Chandra Singh were honoured with the Chief Minister’s medal for exemplary service.
