VSP expansion on schedule, says Bishnoi

VISAKHAPATNAM: For major industries in and around the city, the Independence Day celebration presented an occasion to take stock and recollect the milestones achieved.

Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Chairman and Managing Director P.K. Bishnoi complimented the RINL collective for the excellent performance in 2007-08 and said the expansion project had been going on as scheduled during the past 15 months. He was confident of meeting the completion schedule.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman K.R.Kishore said that the port had handled an all-time high traffic of 64.6 million tonnes in 2007-08. During the current fiscal, the 25.1 m tonnes so far handled recorded an 11 per cent growth. The port had been awarded Green Tech Safety Award Silver for 2008 in the service sector for its outstanding achievement. The big challenge ahead was the emergence of new non-major ports, he noted.

HSL progress

At the Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Director (Technical) Naresh Kumar said the HSL had made significant progress during the last year and the turnover had increased to Rs.510 crores.

The yard had 16 ships in order out of which two were ready for delivery to the Andaman & Nicobar administration. Modernisation of submarine underway was a strategic project for the HSL and more such orders were to follow with its successful completion, Cdr. Naresh Kumar said. The total order book was at Rs.1,600 crores. The yard had delivered three ships of 30,000 DWT series and the last one was planned for delivery by March 2009. The first ship of 53,000 dwt would be ready for floating by November.

Cdr. Naresh Kumar said the ship repair turnover had increased to a record Rs.120 crores last year. During the current year, repair of two foreign rigs was completed on time and the HSL secured the largest ship repair order for lay up repairs of Sagar Ratna at a cost of Rs.380 crores.

‘Tremendous job’

The Waltair Division had done a tremendous job in 2007-08 by lifting 38.16 million tones of originating freight and carried 21.78 million passengers while the revenue earned was Rs.2,596.48 crores, 12.3 per cent higher than in 2006-07, Divisional Railway Manager D. Kamilla said. In the first quarter of the current year, the revenue earned was Rs.706.33 crores, 21.1 per cent more than in the corresponding period last year.

At the HPCL, Executive Director-Visakh Refinery P.A.B. Raju said in 2007-08, the highest thru put of 9.4 mmt was achieved. The refinery had completed 7.7 million safe man hours.

Dredging Corporation of India CMD S.S. Tripathi said the DCI was carrying out the dredging of the Sethusamudram ship channel project. The financial performance of the company had been very good in the last financial year with the highest-ever operational income of about Rs.705 crores and a record turnover of Rs.771 crores and a net of profit of Rs.155 crores.

NALCO General Manager (Port Faclities) G. Abbas Vali said the unit accounted for 102 per cent achievement of calcined alumina export of 8.59 lakh tonnes spread over 30 shipments.

At the NTPC Simhardi, General Manager incharge R. Venkateswaran said the erection of boiler column, turbine deck casting and balance of plant works were in progress in the Stage-II expansion.

After financial restructuring and implementation of the revival package, the turnover of the BHPV was expected to reach Rs.1,000 crores in five years with 54,000 mt product in following the support of the BHEL, its Managing Director Om Prakash said.

Regional Provident Fund Commissioner K. Ganesh Babu hoisted the national flag at the fund’s office at Marripalem. At the Coromandel Fertilizers, General Manager (Manufacturing) G.S.N. Reddy unfurled the tricolour.
