HYDERABAD: The five-day Nursery Mela got off to a colourful start with young and the old making a beeline to see an array of flowers priced between Rs. 25 and Rs. 3,000 on display.

Undeterred by threat perception from terror groups, plant lovers turned up in large numbers at the mela that was inaugurated by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday morning at People’s Plaza. It is open every day between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. till August 19.

Exotic varieties

The nursery put up by the Horticulture Department showcased orchids, hanging plants, flowering seasonal and Thai varieties of Aglonema, Netherlands Anthuriums.

Vanda, a rare flower that remains fresh for 3 months was presented to the Chief Minister. Flowers like Cattelya, Oncidum, Cylamen, Anthuriums and Plecatranthus (the all-season flower) besides 20 varieties of Chrysanthemum and five varieties of Thailand Aglonema are on display.

The mela had everything for plant lovers, farm scientists and farmers too. People lined up before the 60-odd nurseries selling indoor and outdoor plants. Some gave a demonstration of laying of carpet grass. There were others, who were more than willing to give their expertise on environment and visual assessment, landscape planning, designing, development and feasibility studies. Farmers from the districts were happy with the readiness of officials to talk of government schemes being implemented under the National Horticulture Mission. They were seen frequenting stalls where irrigation systems, tools and implements, bio-fertilizers, seeds and tissue culture were displayed.

Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy, Housing Minister Botcha Satyanaryana, Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, Horticulture Commissioner K. Madhusudana Rao, Executive Director State Horticulture Mission H. Arun Kumar and Project Director, AP Micro Irrigation Project K.V. Satyanarayana were present.
