CHENNAI: Coaching terminals will be developed at Tambaram and Kochuveli and facilities at Tirunelveli and Rameswaram strengthened, Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Chopra said on Friday. Speaking after unfurling the national flag at the zonal railway headquarters here on Independence Day, he said carrying an ever-increasing number of passengers involved a better ticketing system, more passenger trains and terminals for handling them. The campaign to popularise the use of Automatic Ticket Vending Machines would continue. Mr. Chopra said commissioning of broad gauge lines in Tiruchi-Manamadurai and Vriddhachalam-Salem sections had opened alternative routes to Rameswaram and Salem. Completion of gauge conversion of the main line between Villupuram and Mayiladuthurai by the year-end would reopen the link to Cuddalore, Chidambaram and Sirkazhi. As part of the drive to upgrade passenger amenities, both in trains and at stations, mechanised cleaning would be introduced at major stations. The General Manager complimented G.M.P. Reddy, Inspector-General of Police and Chief Security Commissioner, on being awarded the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service. Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly hoisted the national flag on the Madras High Court premises. At the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), Manali Refinery Complex, Managing Director K.K. Acharya unfurled the tricolour. He said the CPCL achieved a net profit of Rs.703 crore during the first quarter of 2008-09, the highest-ever quarterly profit in its history. The Executive Director-Basin Manager, KG-PG, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) hoisted the national flag on the ONGC premises at Egmore. He said the company had forged alliances with global deep water players such as Pertrobras, Norsk Hydro for early monetisation of the deep water discoveries made in KG-DWN-98/2 block and adjoining nomination blocks. General Manager, Indian Oil, Southern Region, D.S.L. Prasad, unfurled the national flag at the southern regional office. At the Madras Fertilisers Plant at Manali, Chairman and Managing Director S. Muralidharan hoisted the tricolour. Revenue collection upChief Commissioner of Income-Tax, Chennai-V, Ashwani Kumar, hoisting the national flag on Aayakar Bhawan premises, complimented the staff for the increased revenue collection in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry region during the current year. He exhorted them to strive harder during the remaining part of the financial year for achieving excellence in all areas of administration. Commissioner of Central Excise, Chennai I Commissionerate, Raj Kumar Barthwal, hoisted the national flag at the Central Excise zonal headquarters at Nungambakkam. At the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce, its president, S. Vijaikumar Bafna unfurled the national flag. State Election Commissioner D.Chandrasekaran hoisted the flag at the Commission office at Vadapalani. At the CPI (M) party office here, Central Committee member R. Umanath unfurled the tricolour. DMDK president Vijayakant hoisted the national flag at the party office.
