Stanley reservoir receives more than one-lakh cusecs

7-foot increase in level in just 14 hours

Ryots feel water inadequate for samba cultivation

METTUR: Surplus water from Karnataka dams and heavy rain in the catchments have brought more than a lakh cusecs of water into the Stanley reservoir here, recording 7 feet increase in its level in just 14 hours on Friday.

From its 66.200 feet on Thursday night, the dam’s level increased to 73.300 feet on Friday evening, holding out promise to delta farmers who, till some days back, were worried about the dam’s poor storage position.

The farmers feel that the water would not be adequate to go for samba cultivation.

S. Ranganathan, general secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers Association, told The Hindu that he had asked farmers to concentrate on kuruvai crop at present. Fluctuations marked the inflows since Thursday night.

The dam registered a sharp increase in the inflow from 43,997 cusecs on Thursday to 71,545 cusecs in the early morning of Friday. Then, it steadily increased to 85,439 cusecs at 8 am and crossed the one-lakh mark at 1,42,024 cusecs at noon.

But late evening reports pointed to a sharp drop in the inflow to 1,25,066 cusecs. The dam authorities increased the discharge from 13,036 cusecs on Thursday night to 13,777 cusecs on Friday evening. The dam’s storage was 35.60 tmcft. On August 7, 2007, the dam received more than one lakh cusecs. But since its level stood at 120 feet then, the entire receipts were discharged into the river course. PWD officials hoped that the heavy inflow would continue for another few days. “However, it depends on the rain,” a senior official said.

The Dharmapuri district administration asked villagers on the Cauvery banks to move to safer places following heavy receipt of inflows.
