Two injured in blast near parade venue in Assam

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: Two persons were injured in a bomb blast allegedly triggered by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) near the Independence Day function venue at Dharmasala, about 8 km from lower Assam’s Dhubri town, on Friday.

The blast occurred at the Block Development Office.

In another incident, a bomb hanging on a tree on the parade ground at Gauripur town of Dhubri district exploded. But, there was no casualty.

Another blast occurred near the parade venue at Kajalgaon in Chirang district when suspected ULFA militants lobbed a grenade. No one was injured.

In Chirang district, the public chased a group of three ULFA militants who allegedly tried to destroy a flag hoisted on the premises of the Bhutiapara Lower Primary School. The militants fired some rounds from their pistol to scare the public. But, the locals apprehended two militants. They beat them up before handing them over to security forces. A 9 mm pistol and some ammunition were recovered from them.

“Usher in peace”

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi appealed to the ULFA and other militant outfits to shun violence and come forward for talks.

He was delivering the Independence Day speech at the function held on Latasil playground here.
