Olympic Games
BEIJING: China’s World No. 1 Lin Dan and Malaysia’s great hope Lee Chong Wei will battle for gold in the Olympic men’s badminton after both won their semifinals on Friday. World champion Lin strolled over his training partner Chen Jin 21-12, 21-18 as China stepped up its campaign for a clean sweep of all five titles at this tournament. In contrast, Lee is gunning for his country’s first ever Olympic gold in any sport, and has described the pressure as immense. Lee downed South Korea’s champion Lee Hyunil 21-18, 13-21, 21-13. Lee said he was nervous during the first game and almost gave up on the second game, before steeling himself for the third. “Today I went all out,” said Lee. South Korea’s Lee said he was trying to save energy to last out the match, but eventually ran out of steam. In the men’s doubles, China’s Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng downed South Korea’s Lee Jae Jin and Hwang Ji Man 22-20, 21-8 to reach the final. The win set up a gold medal showdown with Indonesia’s Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan who beat Danes Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen 21-19, 21-17. Gold for ChinaChina’s Du Jing and Yu Yang won the women’s doubles gold defeating South Korea’s Lee Hyojung and Lee Kyungwon 21-15, 21-13. China’s Wei Yili and Zhang Yawen beat Japan’s Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna for bronze. — Agencies
