KOCHI: The poor has been denied justice, as they do not have the money to file their cases before the Supreme Court, Minister for Welfare of Backward Classes and Scheduled Communities A.K. Balan has said. Inaugurating the orientation programme and remedial coaching for students belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and backward communities here on Friday, the Minister said a situation has risen where the common man could not take up his case beyond a magistrate court. The programme was organised by the standing committee for the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes at the Cochin University of Science and Technology. Mr. Balan said the government was not against private groups investing in the State. But they should ensure social justice. The private sector was yet to provide adequate opportunities to people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Gangan Prathap, Vice-Chancellor, Cusat, said Kerala should have at least 15 universities in the next five years. He said there were only two universities from the State among the top 100 in the country. Dr. Prathap urged the students to adapt quickly to the emerging university atmosphere, and improve their skills in communicative English .D. Rajeev, Director, School of Legal Studies, welcomed the gathering. N.D. Inasu, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Cusat; N. Chandramohankumar, Registrar; Joy Job Kulavelil, N.K. Vasudevan, K. Mohanachandran (all syndicate members); S. David Peter, Principal, School of Engineering; D. Mavoothu, Director of Students’ Welfare, K.R. Deepak, senate member; and Reshma Divakaran, vice-chairperson of university union, spoke.
