‘Committed to holding BBMP Council polls’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said that the State Government is committed to holding elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as per the Karnataka High Court directive.

In early July, the High Court directed the Government to hold elections to the BBMP Council within three months. Speaking after hoisting the national flag at Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground here on Friday on the occasion of Independence Day, the Chief Minister said the Government was also in favour of direct election to the post of BBMP Mayor with a five-year term.

Stating that the Government had launched several projects to tackle the infrastructure problems in the city, the Chief Minister said Rs. 1,800 crore would be spent on providing basic infrastructure. Steps had been taken to expedite works on the Bangalore Metro Rail and the high speed rail link to the international airport at Devanahalli, he added.
