Crop loss estimated at Rs. 40 crore

Staff Correspondent

‘67 per cent of State’s fertilizer needs supplied’

Shops to be built using grants given to MLAs

DAVANGERE: S.A. Ravindranath, Minister for Agriculture, has said that the crop loss on account of heavy rainfall in the State in the past one week has been estimated at Rs. 40 crore. Referring to the fertilizer shortage, he told presspersons here on Friday that the Union Government had supplied 3.04 lakh tonnes of DAP fertilizer, 2.9 lakh tonnes of complex fertilizer, 3.67 lakh tonnes of urea and 1.69 lakh tonnes of MoP fertilizer to the State so far.

He said, put together, 67 per cent of the total fertilizer requirement of the State had been supplied.

However, he claimed there would not be any adverse affect on agricultural yield this year despite the fertilizer shortage or excessive rainfall.

To a question, he said an agricultural university would be set up in Raichur this year. There was a proposal to set up another such university in Davangere too.

Shops would be built with the grant given to MLAs, near the Agriculture Department, to market products grown using organic farming methods, he said and added that although there had been a great demand for such produce, there was a need to provide them with proper marketing space and infrastructure.
