Nutritious meal scheme for pregnant women launched

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Food Minister E.V. Velu inaugurated the scheme of providing nutritious meals three times a day to pregnant women at a cheaper cost at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Navalpakkam in the Cheyyar Health Unit District (HUD) in Tiruvannamalai district on Saturday.
Mr. Velu said that while the scheme of providing nutritious meals to pregnant women was in existence in government hospitals, the scheme was not present at the PHCs, thus affecting women in the rural areas. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had introduced the scheme in all PHCs to eliminate the difficulties faced by pregnant women admitted to the PHCs in procuring food from their homes. The task of cooking nutritious meal had been entrusted to women self-help groups (SHG), and an agreement signed between the Navalpakkam PHC and the concerned SHG, he said.
The Minister also inaugurated a renovated operation theatre at the PHC. It was renovated at the cost of about Rs. 4 lakhs, which comprised a donation of Rs.1.58 lakh, government grant of Rs.1.50 lakh and users’ contribution of Rs.90,000. Mr. Velu also inaugurated a cluster resource centre constructed at the cost of Rs. 2 lakh and a 3-classroom building built the cost of Rs.6.45 lakh under the Sarva Siksha Abhyan in Korkkai, and a part-time fair price shop in Korukkathur Madhura Malaivadi.
