Non-invasive procedures to check liver disease complications
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: A new interventional radiological procedure was performed at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology for the first time on Saturday on a person suffering from chronic liver disease.
The procedure, known as BRTO (Balloon Occlusion Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration), was demonstrated by two South Korean doctors J.H. Won and C.S. Kim, as part of the Indo-Korean workshop on ‘Non-surgical procedures for treating chronic liver diseases and complication of blood vomiting’.
When the diseased/hardened liver resists blood flow, blood from the portal vein, due to increased pressure, gets diverted to the abdomen, along the inner lining of oesophagus and stomach, forming abnormal blood vessels.
Blood vomiting would occur when the vessels rupture and it could turn fatal, P. N. Rao, Chief of Hepatology and Nutrition of the Institute, told mediapersons.
Patients suffering from chronic liver disease could now opt for two highly skilled interventional radiological procedures, TIPSS (Tranjugular Intrahepatic Porto Systemic Shunt) and BRTO, instead of surgeries.
